Ok, so I don’t have much hair now, but that wasn’t always the case.
My first lessons in adult friendship came from television.
Full House had three single men raising a trio of girls, while Perfect Strangers saw distant cousins standing tall on the wings of their dreams.
And in the couple minutes between, commercials might show me one guy dusting dandruff off another’s shoulder.
These cringe-worthy Head and Shoulders ads emblazoned their slogan in my brain:
You never get a second chance to make a first impression
That may be equally true of developer homepages as it is of first dates.
The EveryDeveloper team and I looked at 30 homepages from top dev-focused companies. Your homepage is your chance to communicate your ideal first impression, even if many find you through other paths.
Developers will look for signs that your product is for them:
- Do you mention developers, docs, or code?
- Do you include things they care about in your global nav?
- Do you explain use cases, pricing, and other important factors?
We’ve made a gallery of screenshots available so you can see for yourself. Click to your favorites, or use the arrows to browse in full screen. You’ll find Twilio, Stripe, GitHub, and 27 others.
Take notes on your favorite first impressions, or read our trends analysisโincluding what nav item is in all but three of our examples.
