My favorite developer joke

Pat Programmer opens a web browser and searches “developer jokes.”

The top result is a blog post from your dev-focused company.

Here’s what happens next:

  • Pat clicks
  • Pat reads
  • Pat laughs

Seems reasonable so far. What about this?

  • Pat signs up for an account
  • Pat confirms their email address
  • Pat figures out how to use your product
  • Pat has enough success to become a customer

And it all started from your humorous blog post!

That journey itself seems like a joke. Even with a huge volume of developers, it might never happen. Keyword-chasing SEO content could easily send you hunting for these sorts of opportunities. Every month, 1,600 people search for “developer jokes,” according to Ahrefs (a tool we use ourselves).

These high-traffic topics can seem compelling until you realize those are one-off visits, practically the definition of a vanity metric.

Even worse, there are probably a lot of non-developers searching for developer jokes, perhaps to amuse the developer in their life.

Yes, evergreen traffic is great, but relevant evergreen traffic is better.

It can be hard to see this while staring at a list of SEO keywords, especially when you’re enticed by some high volumes.

P.S. My favorite developer joke (so bad it’s good):

There are 10 types of people: those who understand binary and those who don’t.
