Opposites attract (you know)

It’s time to flip tables. Not in anger, but to find out if your strong opinion makes sense.

You know I have a thing for Paula Abdul. How can you not like someone who sang and danced with a cartoon?

That was the music video to Opposites Attract.

You don’t have to go “three steps forward and two steps back”… but you can still attract developers with opposites.

I’ve said before that opinions are important (if you missed that, read it here).

Companies and products are built on opinions. Even if you pride yourself on being agnostic… then that’s your opinion.

Specifically, strong opinions will attract the right developers.

You can test your opinions by articulating the opposite.

You don’t need to be “right,” but you want to share why you arrived at your choice.

I use these two Medium posts as examples when I coach engineers to write technical content. Neither is right, but they’ll both attract developers interested in the React vs Vue debate.

An opposite opinion should be plausible, or else yours probably isn’t compelling.

“Everyone should be kind to one another” is a fine thing to think. Only debaters (yeah, I see you getting ready to reply) will argue against it.

A strong opinion will have a natural, reasonable opposite.

Use it to find your developer product’s opinion. Then share your view (or Vue) everywhere.
