Do you want to be the “Stripe of” your category?
It’s often given as an example of great DX, straightforward docs, and frictionless adoption.
But my recommendation is: you don’t want to copy Stripe.
If you copied Stripe, it would assume:
- Your company is at the same stage
- Your product has the same audience
- What’s worked for them would work for you
There are plenty of reasons not to use Stripe as a measuring stick.
So, why do so many “experts” like me use them in examples?
Because there’s always something to learn from their approach. You pick and choose, you don’t copy wholesale.
Almost always, I’ll look at Stripe alongside several other top dev tool companies.
Where do they overlap? Where do one or two stand out? That’s where the insights are!

And, yes, there’s one thing from Stripe that you might want to adapt (not copy!) for yourself.
